Getty Museum, Los Angeles
Experimental turntablist Maria Chavez constructed a monumental sculpture of discarted museum wallboard, gigantic subwoofers, and tossed-pennies found at the basin of the Getty’s water features. This assemblage of materials vibrated as the result of Chavez’ manipulation of found and broken vinyl, using uniquely modified double-needled-stylus on her turntable. Glinting in the afternoon light, Chavez’ physically commanding installation of simply assembled forms evoked minimalist sculpture of Donald Judd and Richard Serra, and its quivering reverberatoins echoed the sound art experimentailsm of the 1970s.
